Skate Shoe Evolution #1..Etnies

Going with the evolution of the skate shoe.. I won't be able to cover as much as I would like to as I'm limited to what mags I have (nothing on Sheep shoes, sorry), but regardless it should be fun.

Starting it off is one of the first Pro Model skate shoes ever and some early Etnies ads. I threw in some random Natas ads...just because..

If you're into the whole Instagram thing, you can follow this guy at #oscarputdowntheknife

Unless you were there you can't imagine the rumors and BS surrounding this guy's name.

In other news...super excited to be heading to Spain (Barcelona) then the U.K. in a couple months. Any recommendations/suggestions?

Next post will longer..

Skate Shoe Evolution #2 of 10. Airwalk

Skate Shoe Evolution #3 of 10..Vision Street Wear

Continuing on, Vision Street Wear is next (obviously). Another company with a rotating cast of characters... not sure exactly when they disappeared from the skate scene but I don't remember seeing them around when the baggy pants and small wheels trend came in during the early 90's. But apparently they're "back"

And I don't know if it's from his Ban This part but for some reason whenever I think of Vision Street Wear shoes I'm reminded of Ray Barbee..

More coming soon..

Skate Shoe Evolution # 4 of 10..Vans

Was planning on doing this post next anyways, but with the Vans Pool Party just occurring and the mention of the Salman Agah shoe on CBI it's a done deal.

A little Cab heavy, but oh well, it's his first appearance on here. Dude is synonymous with Vans. FYI: updated the previous Etnies and Vision Street Wear posts with a couple more ads that I came across.
Good skate heavy weekend....anyone else hung over?

Will continue with the Evolution of the Skate Shoe series in the next few days, just wanted to take a short break to post a video done by my buddies at Shredder's Lair called "the Art of Shredding". Definitely recommend it.  Here's the full video;

Be back soon, going to get more contemporary with the next few posts and end on a grand scale. What you won't see...the stripes, the swoosh, and the greater than/star thingy...

Wait for it..

Just getting back from a two week trip to Barcelona and England.. will continue with the Skate Shoe Evolution posts soon, promise.. Chrome Ball's dead??

Don't call it a comeback..because it isn't.

I've been sitting on two half-completed posts for well over a month now. Truth be told it's funner to look at other stuff on the internet then to put the effort into contributing..

But, had to share this recent video of Rodney Mullen and Brian Lotti from 1992 that I stumbled upon the other day. Seeing new footage, even if it's 20 years old, of either one of these two is a rare treat indeed..

Going to get my butt in gear and finish up the skate shoe evolution series soon then move on to other stuff I've been wanting to do for some time. Thanks for your patience..

Evolution of the Skate Shoe # 5... D.C.

What's the hold up??

a. My laptop had over 90 malware/adware entries on it.
b. I've been too busy skating and having fun.
c. I've been mourning the death of The Chrome Ball Incident
d. Too lazy.
e. Moved magazines to the garage and therefore had to get a new scanner.
f. All of the above.
g. None of the above.

You decide (bonus points if you get this reference).

After giving it some thought I'm going to pull the plug on these Evolution of the Skate Shoe series posts. It's a great idea, I just don't think that I have enough  magazines/ads to do it justice. So, instead of doing the 10 posts I had originally planned on, I'm going to combine everything into a few more remaining posts and then continue on with the other ideas I've been sitting on for a while. So, here is Evolution of the Skate Shoe post #5 focusing on D.C. shoes, with 2 more to go..

Colin McKay....hope we see a part in the new Plan B video.

Danny Way kickflip.. I don't know why they decided to get rid of that round  logo..

They got Mo..

Oldie but a goodie.. the DC Euro Super Tour went off!

Say what you want about this guy but the talent is undeniable... and those shoes look pretty good too. Nyjah Huston, back noseblunt slide.

I had a white pair of Sal 23's..went to Europe, came home and they mysteriously disappeared. I still have hope that they're going to pop up some time..

Javier Sarmiento

PJ Ladd

Rick McCrank

I was hoping to bump into Tom on my recent trip to Barcelona.. maybe next time.

Eric Koston

Arto Saari, kickflip to fakie.

Check out the timeline in case you're not already familiar with them..

Skate Shoe #7.. Leftovers.

Done with shoes.. but here are a few leftovers that I either forgot to add in other posts or warrant a second gander.. also a few random odds and ends I came across.

Sal Barbier nosebluntslide transfer.

Found an old photo of me recently wearing my favorite skate shoes of all time..Axion Guy Mariano's. I had three pairs of these damn things in a row and wore them until they fell apart. I thought it was cool to see Axion doing a newer version ("The Nino"), but it doesn't quite capture how rad these shoes were.

..and sadly, I threw these out a few years back but kept the box for some reason. To be honest I didn't care for the shoes that much they were too narrow but dude ripped so I was hoping some of his good mojo would rub off on me. Nope.

This one really should have been on the Jenkem Mag's most terrifying skate shoe list.. the infamous Zero Two..

Oh, and these velco Airwalks were pretty hideous too. Even back then when I had a pair I knew they were kind of shitty...

Interesting to see Puma making a re-entry back into the skate game.. this is the Donger (Kien Lieu) from 2001.

Oh yeah, started a Tumblr site because I noticed some ads I scanned were popping up on there.. so check it out.. I think I'm  ODG1 or something like that..

P.S. Fuck!

With all the hype surrounding Tony Hawk, it's easy to forget that he's just an amazing skateboarder.. and then you get a good reminder like this;

My all time favorite skater and friend from Brazil, Dan Redlew. Please if you're an industry type sponsor this guy. Absolute brilliance.. and he saw the Pope.

Trick Tips/ Step by Step/How to..

Hello..

Previously a staple of  skateboarding magazine, similar to the infamous "slam section", the how to or trick tip is a rare find these days. Perhaps that's because most of the time they were completely useless and were more funny than actually helpful and would often follow a format of..."flip your board, land, ride away stoked".

Eric Dressen with a stylish wallride variation..

Rick Howard. Probably never done before or since one foot 5-0 to fakie..

Interesting story about this one.. I tried learning 360 flips based off of seeing this step by step. Had them for a while, then lost them. Learned them switch in the 90's, then later got them back in the early 2000's.. Later on I thought it was "Lil' Stevie", however only learned after digging it up that it was "Lil' Joe"..

Mike V. with some vert skating advice..

Damian Carbajal+Dan Sturt=perfection..

As mentioned  in Ed Templeton''s Epicly Later'd where he gets the Circle A ad without his name..

More Sturt goodness..

Delay in updates is due to my retardedness at not being able to remember how to do side by side images in blogger. Think I got it now. Coming up next, The Gonz..

Check this out..

I have nothing to say.. just had a few drinks and while putting together a Gonz post and came across this one and thought it was a good flick.... think it's a make??

Couldn't if we tried..

Circa '88. Probably one of the only dudes who can wear a  helmet with ear covers and have it look cool..

I hadn't realized it until I blew this image up a bit but check out the hand-drawn "blind" logo on Mark's board. Could this be the prototype for the logo that's still used to this day? Hmmm..

This was pretty awesome. The re-make was pretty solid too..

Funny phenomena in skateboarding which apparently extends to writing blog articles about skateboarding.. any time you go "watch this!", the results are usually disastrous. Such is the case with these posts. I was sure I had a ton of Gonz images but after going through my magazines only came up with a handful. Regardless, everything I came across is golden.  I have some older posts as well.. here and here. By the way, check out Gonz's YouTube channel. Pretty cool stuff on there and if I'm not misstaken a throwaway clip from Video Days. I'm including this one because this is similar to the injury I took myself out with on  Go Skateboarding Day...

You should have seen the FourStar Anthology by now, but if not...

By the way, do we happen to know where Tyler Bledsoe is going to end up now that Alien is done?? One of my personal faves..

See ya.

Anybody out there had skate-setup madness? I went through a phase within the last year or so where I became extremely, for lack of a better term, OCD about my trucks. It became a total obsession to where if it wasn't exactly the way I wanted, I had to figure out what wasn't working. I ended up buying and going through several sets before finally settling on Indy 139's. When all was said and done I took a pic with my phone to document how ridiculous I had become;

Displaying photo.JPG

I recently had the same issue with wheels. I went down to skating 50mm Bones which allowed for great control but felt like I was going too slow. So I upped it to 52mm Spitfires but that felt kind of clunky, I tried 51mm Bones, which also didn't feel right, and ended up back where I started with the 50mm's. I'm hoping that this will be where I stay as all this fussiness adds up to a lot of money being spent. We'll just have to wait and see..

Oh yeah, Happy belated Birthday to Sal Barbier..

How the hell you going to ollie to wall ride on a moving bus?

Austyn Gillette reallly knows how to ride a skateboard.

Foreign skateboard diplomacy at it's finest..Kenny Reed.

Everything you see of Lee Yankou is just beastly. Maybe it's a Canadian thing? Sad to hear that Think Skateboards went the way of the Dodo bird.

Super duper honored and stoked to have a "Sklog" featured in the latest issue of the Skateboard Mag. Make sure you go pick that up! Thanks Templeton!

I felt that I wasn't quite done with the Gonz stuff so I dug a bit deeper and came up with some other randoms.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to include my original Gonz Fingerboard from the early 90's still tucked safely away in it's sealed plastic wrapper....cough; (skatehoarder, skatehoarder)..
